One of the oldest surviving Portuguese conserva brand names, originating in Ovar and Furadouro before the Brandão family relocated the factory to Matosinhos in 1939. A varina was the fishwife who walked the streets of Lisbon selling the catch, carrying fish in a basket on her head. The brand name is a tribute to her.
