Robert Chancerelle opened the first friture cannery in Douarnenez, Brittany in 1853, making Connétable the oldest sardine cannery still operating in the world. During the American Civil War, when there were few canneries on American soil, the company's sardine tins fed soldiers on campaign. The iconic red tin, launched decades later, remains the flagship product today.
