Founded in 1933 in the harbour town of Yui, Shimizu Ward, Shizuoka City, originally as an export cannery serving European and American markets. In the postwar period, exchange rate shifts pushed the company toward domestic OEM subcontracting. A later decision to make a product worthy of employee pride led to the launch of Premium Tuna in Olive Oil under the White Ship brand, using bincho maguro albacore from Japanese summer catches, packed in selected olive oil and held for six months before release. The factory operates a direct retail shop for visitors. Yui Canning is widely considered one of Japan's most distinguished small-scale canned tuna producers.
