Traces its origins to 1914 when a Van Camp family cannery in San Diego began packing albacore tuna. The Chicken of the Sea name was introduced in 1952, referencing the pale, delicate flesh of albacore. Acquired by Thai Union Group, the world's largest tuna processor, in 2000. The brand's mermaid mascot has appeared on packaging since the 1950s. Chicken of the Sea, StarKist, and Bumble Bee together account for the majority of US canned tuna sales.
