Founded in 1853 in Vila Real de Santo António, Ramirez is the oldest fish cannery in the world still in operation. Five generations of the Ramirez family have run it through the fall of empires and two world wars, moving the main factory north to Matosinhos in the 1940s where the fish were, pioneering the ring-pull can in the 1960s, and opening one of the most advanced food production facilities in Europe at their Lavra site. Fourteen international labels, fifty markets, 170 years without stopping.
