La Gondola

The Lazzara brothers left Italy in the 1920s rather than supply Mussolini's army from their family fish factory, selling everything to a Greek family and eventually settling in Matosinhos. Carlo Lazzara founded the Portuguese cannery in 1940, beginning with salted anchovy fillets. The factory passed through his family, then to Portuguese owners, reinventing itself in the 1980s around quality over volume. Now based in Póvoa de Varzim, sold in thirty countries.
