Pacific Northwest

The coasts of Washington, Oregon, and Northern California support a diverse artisan canning industry that draws on some of the Pacific's most prized seafood. Wild Alaskan salmon, Dungeness crab from Puget Sound and the Oregon coast, Pacific albacore tuna caught by pole-and-line vessels, and native oysters from Willapa Bay and Humboldt Bay are the region's signature products. Artisan producers including Wildfish Cannery, Lummi Island Wild, American Tuna, and Ekone Oyster Company have built a premium tinned fish sector in the Pacific Northwest rooted in direct relationships with fishing families. The region was also home to the original American canning industry: the first Alaskan salmon cannery opened at Klawock, Prince of Wales Island, in 1878.
