Algarve

Portugal's southernmost coast, where cold Atlantic waters meet the warmer influence of the Mediterranean, has sustained tuna and sardine fishing since antiquity. The Algarve's Atlantic ports, particularly Olhão, Portimão, and Vila Real de Santo António, were among the first in Portugal to develop commercial canning industries in the late 19th century. When the great tuna migrations shifted away from Algarve waters in the late 1950s, the industry followed the fish west to the Azores, a movement that created Cofaco. Today the Algarve supports both industrial and artisan canners: Conserveira do Sul in Olhão, founded by António Jacinto Ferreira in 1954, produces the Manná, Good Boy, and Jupiter brands. Conserveira do Arade in Parchal is the only artisan cannery reviving the western Algarve's historic tradition under the Saboreal and Papa Anzóis labels.
