Shizuoka

A coastal prefecture south of Mount Fuji and Japan's undisputed centre of canned seafood production, home to the ports of Shimizu, Yaizu, and Shizuoka City, which together handle a significant share of Japan's tuna and bonito landings. The Sea Chicken brand, launched here by Hagoromo in 1958, became Japan's best-selling canned tuna and gave the generic term for canned tuna to the Japanese language. Yui Canning, founded in 1933 in Shimizu, produces Premium Tuna in Olive Oil under the White Ship brand and is considered one of Japan's finest small-scale producers. The prefecture is also Japan's leading canned mackerel and sardine producing region. Shizuoka canneries export globally and anchor the domestic canned fish culture that has made Japan one of the world's most sophisticated markets for preserved seafood.
